Walking and Running Shoes - Forget Your Size and Go For Proper Fit

My daughter just finished running the 2009 Chicago Marathon for the American Cancer Society and so did about 45,000 other runners. When she finished, three of her toenails had fallen off and her other toes were black and blue. She had several blisters when she finished the race. One of the first things she said was "I do not think my running shoes fit good." And, this is after she went to two running stores in her hometown and went through 3 new running shoes trying to get the proper fit.

The feet are the foundation of the body. Therefore, proper balance are critical to success when walking and running.. Quite often, ill-fitted shoes can result in decreased performance and a reluctance to continue the sport. Your shoes are the most important equipment you will need in your walking program.  Properly fitted shoes can help a person to:

  • Reduce the risk of injury
  • Reduce fatigue
  • Enhance endurance
  • Improve/Establish core stability
  • Enhance walking mechanics
  • Decrease the amount of energy used, allowing for longer walks
It takes effort to find the properly fitted shoe. Normally, one foot is a little longer or a little wider than their mate and this could cause a problem in fitting both feet correctly. At some running stores, they will let you put the shoes on and walk/run outside to determine how they fit.

You are encouraged to do just that before you spend your hard earn money on shoes that do not fit your feet. We mostly write about the sport shoes fitting; however, your everyday work shoes and your dress-up shoes need to fit properly as well. We get stuck on what size we wear when we make our purchase. We need to forget the size and work hard to get the proper fit.

It is getting that time of year again when parents go through the frustrating and expensive process of getting their children ready for school. They will pack the malls and big box stores looking for new clothes, notebooks, pencils, rulers, lunch boxes and all the other items the aspiring students need for back to school. Many will forgo the checkout lines and traffic problems and shop online for discount school supplies this year. They will discover the power of the internet to save them time, money, fuel and a head ache as they shop for their children's back to school needs.

There are deals to be had all over the internet and you don't have to spend a dime on gas or stand in line to get them. The internet brings everything you need right into your home. You can compare prices for everything from shoes to pencils and have them delivered right to your door. If the clothes don't fit most online stores provide you with an easy return label that you can just stick on the package and send them right back. Try that with those jeans you bought at the mall that really looked like they would fit.

Some people may enjoy the long grueling day shopping trying to get every item on the list. If that is you then by all means get in your car and drive all over town rounding up all the pens, paper, tape, glue, shoes, socks, belts and lunch boxes for your kids. If spending the day shopping in the crowds and going from store to store to find that elusive graphing calculator your student needs is worse than a root canal, then you need to fire up the internet.

The brick and mortar stores will be advertising all kinds of special deals and incentives to get you in their doors during the back to school shopping season and so will the thousands of online stores. When you make out that list of school supplies and clothes grab your local newspaper and compare those prices with the online stores. Compare the items head to head, brand name for brand name and see what makes the most sense for you. Don't forget to factor in the fuel savings and the money you won't be spending eating or snacking while you are shopping online versus driving around town.

Take a break from the frustration of driving all over town for school supplies. Shop online for discount school supplies instead. Save money on the actual supplies you need plus save on fuel at the same time. Spend the time you will save shopping online doing fun things with your family instead of standing in checkout lines and looking for parking spaces.
